WHAT’S IN MY READING STACK

Is there a better feeling than starting a new novel? Probably not. For us reclusive thoughtful-types, it’s like ecstasy paired with a cup of tea and warm socks. Exciting, right.

I planned to title this post, What’s On My Bookshelf, but honestly, that’s not the way it is. In reality, there are constantly between three and ten books perched precariously on my bedside table, ready to be divulged. Sometimes I get through these stacks in two weeks, other times it will just keep accumulating for months until I finally revert to pushing some back onto the bookshelf.

I’ve been fairly good of late, due to the general breezy attitude of the holiday season, but am determined to continue my reading into 2018. Reading makes for intelligence, people. I am a big advocate for grabbing a book and settling in as your mind becomes cleverer, calmer and altogether better.

Today there are five books ready to go, all of which I am bursting at the seams to begin. I haven’t read any of them before and am highly anticipant.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine – Gail Honeyman

I’m told that this is an awkward yet heart-warming story about a quirky girl who struggles in social situations and does not have a filter when it comes to saying what she thinks. I like her already and the fact that she apparently meets someone makes me smile fondly. Can’t wait to curl up on a Saturday afternoon to read this.

You Do You – Sarah Knight

I’m not crazy over self-help books, but if I’m honest, Sarah Knight has made such an impact through her books, The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck and Get Your Sh*t Together, that I really felt I should probably give it a try. Points to me for not getting the one with a swear word in it. I’m really hoping I find this more helpful than patronising.

One of Us Is Lying – Karen M. McManus

Five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. I AM HOOKED ALREADY TELL ME MORE. The four who walk out alive all have a motive to kill the fifth, but nobody is talking. This makes me think of Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars and I am literally going to finish writing this and start reading.

The Woman In The Window – A.J. Finn

People say this new novel is similar in theme to Girl on the Train, which by the way is amazing and likely my favourite suspenseful mystery I’ve ever read. It’s about a woman who lives in New York City and watches her neighbours like the nosy lady she is. And then one day, after the new neighbours have moved in, she sees something. And suddenly we’re reading a thriller, and I cannot wait to do it. This book, though only released at the start of the year, is apparently already being made into a movie, so I’m getting on board early with this one.

Truly Madly Guilty – Liane Moriarty

I unintentionally ready two novels by Liane Moriarty during my holiday season. She’s just so good at the easy reads. She reminds me of Sophie Kinsella’s Confessions of a Shopaholic, where the characters are hilariously relatable, the storyline is so simple to follow, and the writing itself is uncomplicated and filled with men and drama and food – all that stuff women love. The point of difference for Liane Moriarty is that she incorporates mystery into her novels, which while aren’t as thrilling as some of the previous titles look like they’ll be, create an entirely new suspenseful element to the stories. The previous two haven’t been near scary enough not to put down, and I enjoyed them thoroughly and expect I’ll love this too. She’s the one who wrote Big Little Lies (now made into a Netflix series), if you’re wondering where you’ve heard of her!
